$100,000 Iroquois Stakes Draws Field of Nine Juveniles
On Saturday at Churchill Downs, some of the most promising juveniles in the country will compete in the 33rd edition of the Iroquois Stakes. With a purse of $100,000, the Grade 3 race has drawn a field of nine to compete at a mile and a sixteenth on the main track.
The morning line favorite at odds of 5-2 is Mr. Z for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas. Purchased for $135,000 as a yearling by Zayat Stables, the chestnut son of Malibu Moon won his career debut at Churchill Downs in June before finishing second in both the Sanford (G3) and Saratoga Special (G2). He will be attempting to go two turns for the first time after sprinting in all three career starts. Since returning to Kentucky, he has clocked a bullet workout underneath the Twin Spires.
Bold Conquest should relish the added distance
Second choice at odds of 4-1 on the morning line is Bold Conquest. Trained by Steve Asmussen, the chestnut colt is a son of Curlin and will be taking on winners for the first time after breaking his maiden last time out in his second career start. He won by a head at Saratoga and defeating nine rivals after finishing second in his debut effort. Rosie Napravnik will remain aboard and the pair are scheduled to break from post position eight.
Cleveland Sound trying to rebound after troubled trip
Also in the field at odds of 6-1 is Cleveland Sound. Shaun Bridgmohan will be aboard carrying the colors of West Point Thoroughbreds and the pair will break from post position six. Trained by Graham Motion, the chestnut son of More Than Ready, a $300,000 purchase as a yearling, broke his maiden at first asking at Delaware Park. He was fourth in the Saratoga Special (G2) after encountering a rough trip and traffic. Cleveland Sound will get Lasix for the first time.
