The 35th running of the Grade 2 Swale for three year-old colts features a compact field of six January 30 at Gulfstream Park in a race where it is very difficult to take a firm stand against any of the competitors.
On Saturday at Gulfstream Park, the stakes action will continue with the $100,000 Sweetest Chant Stakes. Restricted to three-year-old fillies, the Grade 3 event will be contested at one mile on the turf and has drawn a full field of twelve.
On Saturday at Fair Grounds, the road to the Kentucky Derby will begin with the $200,000 Lecomte Stakes. Restricted to three-year-olds, the Grade 3 race will be contested at a mile and seventy yards and has drawn a full field of fourteen with one additional listed as also-eligible.
The $200,000, Grade 2 Fort Lauderdale Stakes – one of three graded events on the card - is the featured event January 9 at Gulfstream as a full field of eleven veteran turfers are scheduled to contest the mile and one sixteenth event.
On Sunday at Santa Anita, the featured race is the $200,000 Monrovia Stakes. A Grade 2 event carded at about six and a half furlongs on the downhill turf course, the stakes race has drawn a field of twelve fillies and mares.
