On Saturday at Sam Houston, the featured race is the $200,000 John B. Connally Turf Cup. The Grade 3 race is scheduled to be run at a mile and an eighth on the turf and has attracted a field of nine colts and geldings.

Headlining the field as the morning line favorite at odds of 3-1 is Bim Bam for trainer Ron Moquett. An eight-year-old son of Deputy Wild Cat, he has nine wins over the course of his career and is trying to earn his first graded stakes victory. He has been on the shelf since finishing fifth and last against allowance company at Churchill Downs in November and will be making his seasonal debut.  Deshawn Parker will be aboard from the outside post.

Dreams Cut Short trying to rebound after poor effort

Dreams Cut Short, second choice on the morning line at odds of 4-1, is one of two horses in the race for trainer Michael Maker.  A six-year-old gelded son of Belong to Me, he has six career victories and is going for his first stakes win. He was last seen finishing tenth as the favorite in the Emerald Stakes at Gulfstream Park and has been training steadily since then. James Graham has picked up the mount and they will break from post three.

Coalport going for third consecutive victory

Also in the field at morning line odds of 5-1 is Coalport who also hails from the Maker barn. A six-year-old homebred son of Kitten’s Joy for Ken and Sarah Ramsey, the chestnut is an eight-time winner and comes into this race off of back to back victories. He has been training steadily since his last win in the Bucks Boy Stakes in November at Hawthorne and will break from post position seven under jockey Javier Castellano.
